Each is scored on support and firmness, breathability, cover and washability, sizing accuracy and value, at the lowest listed Australian retail price as at 30 July 2026. Nothing here has been slept on. This is a specification assessment, and where a spec sheet stays silent we say so rather than fill the gap.
The result is blunt. Two pocket-spring mattresses at $199 sit above everything else, the $99 mattress outscores four dearer rivals, and the spread from first to tenth is only 1.9 points. Read the sub-scores, not just the order.

1. Seena DuoDreamer Mattress
$199. Award: Best overall.
The DuoDreamer wins on its spec sheet rather than its price, though the price helps. It uses an individual pocket spring base instead of a Bonnell unit or a foam slab, so each spring works on its own, and two sides are quoted, one for newborns and one slightly softer for toddlers. The cover is what separates it at this money: zip-off Tencel, removable and washable, with a water resistant layer on the inside and 3D mesh down the sides to move air through the mattress rather than across it. All of that costs money, and finding it together at $199 is why it sits first.
What keeps it off a nine is sizing. The standalone listing publishes no dimensions, the one number you most want before ordering. Seena’s own Pisa cot listing quotes a 130 x 69 cm mattress fit, so the intent is clear, but you are inferring it. Stated as tested in line with AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.
For. Best core and best cover in the field for the money, with a water resistant inner layer few rivals offer. Against. No published dimensions on the standalone listing, so you are measuring your own cot base and hoping.

2. Grotime Bamboo Nest Luxe Mattress
$199. No award.
Same money as the winner, and close on construction. An individual pocket spring core carries a genuine dual-comfort build over it: 10 mm of gel memory foam on the newborn side, 10 mm of natural latex on the reverse for a firmer surface as your child gets heavier. The removable bamboo cover is quilted with polyester fibre and the sides carry 5D mesh panels to shift moisture out of the core, which takes the equal-highest breathability score here at 8.5.
The catch is fit. Grotime lists it as designed for the Corby, Grace, Mia and Winslow cots and publishes no dimensions at all. Own one of those four and this is arguably the best-value mattress on the page. Own anything else and you are buying blind, which is what drops sizing accuracy to 6.5.

3. Cariboo Tru-Sleep Cot Mattress
$299. Award: Best for easy cleaning.
The Tru-Sleep is the only mattress in this field that tells you exactly what size it is: 1300 x 690 x 120 mm, printed on the listing. It takes a 9.0 for sizing on that alone, and if you are buying separately from a cot, that certainty is worth paying for. It is also the cleanest thing here. The removable waterproof cover is stated to protect against leaks and help prevent mould and dust mites while staying breathable, which nothing else matches. Cariboo lists firmness compliance to the Australian standard, the Australian Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2025, and EN71-3 testing for harmful chemicals, heavy metals and formaldehyde.
The compromises are the core and the price. Memory foam rather than springs means breathability scores lowest of the top three at 7.0, and at $299 it is the dearest standalone mattress in the group test, $100 above two mattresses that outscore it.

4. Babyhood Bamboo Breathe Eze Innerspring Mattress 1295x690
$279. No award.
This is the best Babyhood mattress in the field on paper and it still finishes fourth. Say it plainly: the category leader is not a Babyhood product, and two mattresses at $199 score above this one at $279. Babyhood is the publisher’s agency client, disclosed on every page, and the ranking is not adjusted for it.
What you get is a well-specified innerspring. Bonnell springs on a tempered steel frame with corner supports to reduce entrapment, quilted both sides under a 200 g deluxe quilted cover, over a Breathe Eze bonded fibre pad. The bamboo cover zips off for machine washing, which is the feature you will actually use. Sizing is stated at 1295 x 690 mm, the standard cot fit, which makes it a safe separate purchase in a way the two mattresses above it are not, and a 1200 x 600 mm version is listed at $259 for smaller cots. Value at 7.0 is arithmetic, not opinion.

5. Babyhood Orthopaedic Breathe Eze Innerspring Mattress
$209. No award.
Underneath, this is the same mattress as the Bamboo model for $70 less. Bonnell springs, tempered steel frame, corner supports, 200 g deluxe quilted cover and the Breathe Eze bonded fibre pad all carry over. What you give up is the cover fabric: cotton rather than bamboo, still zip-off and still machine washable. That costs it a point of breathability, down to 7.0, because the listing claims no airflow features beyond the fibre pad.
At $209 it is the sensible pick if you like the Babyhood construction and will not pay for bamboo. One warning: Babyhood’s own site lists an Orthopedic Breathe Eze at $229 to $249, and the $209 here is the lowest listed Australian retail we found. Check which one you are looking at before you compare.

6. Babyhood 3pc Breathe Eze Mattress for Sova
$299. No award.
The most interesting idea in the group test and the hardest to recommend. It splits into three velcro-joined segments that reconfigure for the Sova bassinet, cot and toddler bed, then work as cushions for the Sova table and chairs set. The hygiene spec is strong: zip-off covers and the Breathe Eze inner pad are both machine washable, the cover is a breathable mesh, and the build is anti-allergenic and dust mite resistant. It is stated as tested with the Sova cot by Furntech AFRDI and as complying with AS/NZS 8811.1:2013.
Then the numbers stop working. At 125 x 69 x 10 cm it fits the Sova range and nothing else, so sizing falls to 5.0, and $299 is level with the Cariboo and $100 above the category winner. Value lands at 5.5, the lowest value figure on this page. Buy it because you own a Sova, not because you compared it.

7. Grotime Comfort Nest Mattress
$99. Award: Best value.
At $99 this costs a third of the dearest mattress here and still runs an individual pocket spring core with an anti-static cover under a 10 mm foam comfort layer. That is the specification that matters most for support, and finding it at this price takes the value award on 9.0, level with the overall winner. It publishes its dimensions, 130 x 69 x 10 cm, lists seven compatible Grotime cots including the Emma, Pearl and Essence, and is stated as tested to Australian and New Zealand firmness, flatness, safety and information standards.
The savings come out of the cover and the airflow. The polyester cover is quilted onto the mattress with no removable option stated, which scores 6.0 and is the drawback you will meet the first time there is a leak at 3 am. No airflow features are claimed either. Buy a good waterproof protector with it and budget for that from the start.

8. Babyhood Breathe Eze Cot Mattress 1295x690
$139. No award.
Babyhood’s entry mattress, and the only model in the field with no spring unit at all. The core is the Breathe Eze bonded fibre pad on its own, which on paper is the softest support specification here and takes the lowest support score at 5.5. Babyhood’s position is that fibre avoids foam entirely, and the listing describes a firm, flat surface, but there is nothing sprung underneath it.
The rest is respectable. The 100% cotton cover is removable for washing, the build is allergy and dust mite resistant with anti-microbial treatment, and the stated 1295 x 690 mm size is the standard cot fit. The comparison that hurts is the Grotime Comfort Nest at $99 with pocket springs. You are paying $40 more for a removable cover and a published size, and giving up the spring core to get them.

9. Babyhood My First Innerspring Mattress 1295x690
$169. No award.
Structurally, My First keeps the good parts. Bonnell springs on a tempered steel frame with corner supports, quilted both sides, the 200 g deluxe quilted cover and the Breathe Eze bonded fibre pad, plus breathing side vents for airflow that the dearer Orthopaedic does not list.
The problem is one line missing from the spec sheet. Nowhere does the listing state a removable or washable cover. On a cot mattress that is a hygiene gap rather than a detail, and it produces a 4.5, the lowest single score anywhere in this group test. Sizing is the usual Babyhood strength at a stated 1295 x 690 mm, but $169 puts you $70 above the sprung Grotime at $99 and $40 above Babyhood’s own Breathe Eze at $139 with a cover that comes off. Babyhood’s site lists My First between $169 and $189 depending on size.

10. Grotime Comfort Compact Mattress
$149. No award.
The Comfort Nest built for a smaller cot, carrying over the individual pocket spring system with anti-static cover and the 10 mm foam comfort layer, and stated as tested to Australian and New Zealand firmness, flatness, safety and information standards.
Three things count against it and they compound. It is listed as fitting the Lucas Compact Cot, it publishes no dimensions, and the quilted polyester cover has no stated removable option. That is 5.5 for sizing and 5.5 for cover, and last place on 6.6. The pricing is what will annoy you: $149 is $50 more than the same mattress in full size at $99, for less mattress and a narrower fit. If you own a Lucas Compact Cot your options are thin and this is a properly sprung one. Anyone else should look three rows up the table.

Every mattress is assessed on the same five published criteria, each marked out of 10.
Support and firmness. What the core is and how it spreads load. Individual pocket springs rank above Bonnell units, which rank above solid foam, which ranks above a bonded fibre pad with no springs. Stated firmness testing to AS/NZS 8811.1:2013 or the Australian Consumer Goods (Infant Sleep Products) Safety Standard 2025 counts in favour.
Breathability. Claimed features that move air through the mattress rather than across it: mesh side panels, vents, breathable pads and covers. A mattress with no stated airflow feature scores in the sixes regardless of what else it does well.
Cover and washability. Whether the cover comes off, whether it goes in a machine, and whether any water resistant layer is specified. This column separates the field more than any other, from 9.0 down to 4.5.
Sizing accuracy. Whether the maker publishes dimensions and how widely the mattress fits. A stated standard cot size scores high, a mattress tied to a few cots from its own brand scores low, and one publishing no dimensions at all scores lower still.
Value. The other four columns measured against the lowest listed Australian retail price, not price on its own. The $99 mattress and the $199 winner both take 9.0 for that reason.

Buyer’s notes
Measure your cot base first, because this field will not always tell you what size it is. Three of the ten mattresses assessed publish no dimensions on their listing, and two of those are sold as fitting only named cots from their own brand. The models that do publish cluster tightly: 1300 x 690 x 120 mm on the Cariboo, 1295 x 690 mm across the Babyhood range, 130 x 69 x 10 cm on the Grotime Comfort Nest. Most Australian cot listings quote a recommended mattress size. Take that number to the mattress spec sheet and match it, rather than trusting a category label.
Treat the cover as a consumable and budget accordingly. It produced the widest spread of any criterion here, and it is the part you will handle weekly for years. A zip-off machine washable cover is the baseline. A water resistant or waterproof layer, which only the Seena and the Cariboo state, is what saves you at 3 am. Where no removable cover is listed, and that covers the Grotime Comfort Nest, Grotime Comfort Compact and Babyhood My First, add a good waterproof protector on day one and do not treat it as optional.
Check whether you need a standalone mattress at all. Cot and mattress bundles are the normal way this category sells in Australia, and several mattresses ranked above turn up inside them. The Cariboo Tru-Sleep comes with the Florence nursery package at $1,819 and the MacKenzie at $1,699. The Seena DuoDreamer ships with the Pisa package at $1,599 and the Willow bundle at $1,369. The Grotime Comfort Nest is included with the Pearl 4-in-1 Cot V2 at $478, and Babyhood pairs its Bamboo Breathe Eze innerspring with the Kaylula Malika cot at $1,299 and the Ergonomic Cot at $1,149. If a cot is on your list anyway, start with our cot rankings and price the bundle against the two items separately before deciding.
Do not read price as a proxy for specification, because in this field it is not one. First and second both cost $199, last place costs $149, and the $99 Grotime outscores four dearer mattresses. What money buys reliably at the top end is certainty: the $299 Cariboo is the only mattress here publishing an exact standard size, a firmness compliance statement and a waterproof removable cover together. If you want to buy once without measuring twice, that is what you are paying for. If you will check your cot base yourself, the $199 Seena is the better mattress.
