The case for it
The upper bassinet earns its place
The raised level is not a separate sleep product balanced inside the frame. It zips around the porta-cot perimeter and lifts the mattress, reducing how far a parent bends during the early months. That is particularly useful after birth or for short grandparents’ stays where a separate bassinet would otherwise be required.
The limit is conservative and developmental: stop at the earlier of 8 kg, six months or sitting. Once the baby reaches any one of those points, move the mattress to the lower position and remove the upper assembly exactly as the manual describes.
Eight-point-six kilograms is a sensible middle ground
Ultralight porta cots can save two kilograms while costing several hundred dollars more or requiring a separate bassinet solution. At 8.6 kg, the Bambino is not effortless, but most adults can lift it into a car without treating it as furniture. Wheels help once open, although they do not change the lifting weight.
The folded 28 cm square section packs neatly beside suitcases. The 79 cm length is less elegant in a small hatchback, so test the boot layout rather than relying on the word “compact”.
Mesh and a modest mattress keep the sleep setup simple
Full mesh improves visibility and limits padded fabric around the sleep area. The supplied mattress is 3.5 cm thick. As with every portable cot, do not add a second mattress or extra padding to make it feel more adult-like; added layers can create entrapment gaps and reduce firmness.

The current Australian-standard wording is incomplete
AS/NZS 2195:2010 is the established folding-cot standard and a meaningful reference. Since 19 January 2026, however, Australia’s mandatory infant-sleep product safety and information standards also apply to portable cots and their mattresses. Babyhood should state the current compliance position on the listing and make the documentation easy to request.
The product cannot legally be supplied without meeting the applicable requirements, but transparent evidence matters. Buyers should not need to translate an older standard reference into a current legal conclusion.
Setup discipline matters more than feature count
Four top rails, a centre lock, wheels, the zip-in bassinet and a side opening create multiple points that must be correctly engaged. Porta-cot accidents are often about incomplete setup, damaged locks or added mattresses rather than the basic concept. Read the instructions before the first overnight trip, when time pressure is low.
Inspect the rails, mesh, zips and base after transport. Stop using the cot if a lock does not engage cleanly or the mattress no longer sits flat and snug.
It is a travel cot, not a permanent nursery substitute by default
The lower level reduces access and the mattress prioritises portability. That may be appropriate for travel, weekends and occasional care. Families planning everyday long-term use should compare the ergonomics, replacement-parts path and manufacturer instructions with a standard cot rather than deciding on price alone.
